GE Showcases Digital Industrial Technologies and Impels Open Innovation at 2016 TECHfest

GE China Technology Center teams up with Zhangjiang High-tech Management Committee to build an open and interactive technology festival, boosting Shanghai’s progression towards a global innovation center

SHANGHAI, Oct. 18 —— Themed ‘Inno-Ecosystem Go’, the 2016 GE TECHfest was held in GE China Technology Center today, presenting the newest industrial trends and innovative achievements on digital industrial. Co-hosted by GE China Technology Center and Shanghai Zhang Jiang Hi-tech Park Management Committee, this is the 2nd year for TECHfest to open to Zhangjiang enterprises. This cooperation aims to build an open and interactive platform for these enterprises to communicate, present and exchange innovative ideas, thus promoting the innovation development of Zhangjiang and Pudong New Area, and contributing to Shanghai’s ambition towards a global innovation center.

“As 2016 is the first year in the 13th five-year plan, it is considered as a key year for us to accomplish the ‘double self-bearing linkage’ innovation center’ and Science City mission, “said Chen Fangyuan, deputy director of Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park Management Committee. “We hope to further and amplify collaborations with domestic and foreign high-tech enterprises, enhance the comprehensive competitiveness of Zhangjiang as well as to show the culture and influence of science and Technology Park through this event. We will promote interactions among science and technology enterprises and build the environment for innovation and development together by holding the twelfth GE Techfest.”

It focuses on local market demands and help customers improve productivity and operational efficiency in medical, aviation, energy, water treatment and oil & gas industries.

  • GE research team has helped Power and Water Treatment group factory in Hangzhou develop an unmanned machining system based on Predix cloud platform, which connect digital controllers and the programmable logic controllers of machine tools with the Internet and can allow monitoring. According to the real-time status based on Predix cloud platform, the system can automatically identify various risks about to happen, optimize cutting speed and feed rate of the machine tools and can send messages to the appropriate operators or managers to remove the risk at the same time. It can also force machine tools to stop working in an emergency. The operation of this system on four machine tools in factory can not only reduce personnel configuration, increase productivity by 15% but also avoid loss that may cause by various processing accidents.
  • “Digital twins”, physical or procedure software model. It’s the real time performance optimization based on data analysis, collection and operation circumstances. In China, GE’s “digital twins” are widely used in the whole life cycle of fans. For instance, the system model of the actual situation and the control system can ensure the applicability and safety of the wind turbine in the field during fan load calculation process. With the digital model of fans supporting development of many increasing work applications, it’s possible to achieve 5% of the annual electricity consumption growth through increasing the power of the previous wind turbines.
  • Scientists from GE China Technology Center have provided domestic electric manufacturers with a brilliant factory solution to reduce production costs and upgrade the factory to the digital. According to the digital implementation of factory management system, lean production overall planning & production process optimization and automatically production design with computer simulation, this program is a synthesis of virtual production, Lean Six Sigma, digital advanced production management, automation, high level detection technology and many other elements, which becomes a demonstration sample for the merging of IT and OT. It is estimated that nearly 10% of direct manufacturing costs will be saved for customers, 30% per capita output increased and 20% WIP inventories fell while doubling the annual output at the same time.

This year GE Techfest has attracted 10 innovative enterprises in Zhangjiang to participate in and present a feast of science and technology together with GE China Technology Center for nearly 3000 guests: A total of 80 innovative technologies covering many fields from medical, aviation, lighting, transportation, power and water treatment to intelligent robotics, machine vision, optoelectronics, new energy, bio technology and so on received much attention. The annual forum invited industry leaders and guests to share their insights on national information strategy, latest trends of Inernet of things and explore future of the digital innovation ecosystem.

As one of ten global research and development facilities at the hub of GE’s worldwide technology development efforts, the GE China Technology Center (CTC) is a diversified, multi-disciplinary organization conducting fundamental research, new product development, engineering service and sourcing service.

Founded in 2000, the GE China Technology Center was relocated to Zhangjiang High-Tech Park since May 2003, with a total physical area of 47,000 square meters.
