Back in June, Dr. Aaron Knobloch was named a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) in a ceremony held at GE’s research center in Niskayuna, NY. The award was presented by Prof. Mina Pelegri of Rutgers University. Nominated by ASME Members and Fellows, this recognition celebrates and pays tribute to outstanding engineering achievements!
Loucas Tsakalakos, Aaron’s manager, celebrated this appointment with a great sense of pride, as Aaron is now the third member of the GE Photonics Lab who is a Fellow of their home society, “One of Aaron’s great strengths as a researcher is the fact that he can communicate and innovate across disciplines, from optics/photonics to mechanics to combustion to sensing. This has led to numerous inventions and publications benefitting the R&D community.”
Aaron is a great example and dynamic role model that delivers great impact. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in Mechanical Engineering, having performed research in microelectromechanical sytems (MEMS) in the famed Berkeley Sensor & Actuator Center (BSAC). He also has a background in combustion from his graduate studies at Berkeley, and his undergraduate studies at Bucknell University. Since joining GE in 2003, Aaron has worked on a variety of advanced technologies. His early work was on developing various advanced MEMS for GE applications, a major highlight being the development of a carbon nanotube-based resonant sensor that was published in Applied Physics Letters. He also made strong contributions in the area of MEMS packaging, particularly around thermal management of electronics using nanotechnology. Similarly, Aaron has worked in developing advanced optical sensors for GE applications. More recently, he has developed novel sensors for battery system monitoring, and is also overseeing a portfolio of programs related to GE Aviation.
Throughout these research efforts, Aaron has found time to play a significant role in his home technical society, the ASME. He has been chair of the main conference of the ASME, the International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition (IMECE) and currently serves as a member of the Program Steering Committee for the IMECE. He has spent countless hours beyond regular work time to the benefit of ASME and the Mechanical Engineering field as a whole.
