64 Miles on 2 Wheels With GetFit GE

Inside several of our research labs, we are working on how technology can help identify patients at risk and help clinicians to make definitive diagnoses when disease is present. Outside of these labs, many of our scientists and engineers across the globe are working every day to lead healthy lifestyles, as research has found that a healthy diet and regular exercise can help reduce the risk of cancer.

Currently, GE Healthcare’s #getfit campaign is inviting people all over the world to share what they are doing to stay healthy. Below I’ve been asked to share how I stay active and over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing what my colleagues are doing to #GetFit at our Global Research Centers in California, Germany, China, India, Brazil and New York.

1. How do you #getfit?
I ride road bicycles quite a bit (around 3000 miles in a season) and belong to a local bike club. Recently, club members took a one-way train ride from Saratoga to North Creek in the Adirondacks with our bikes and road back 64 miles to Saratoga; the weather cooperated, and it was quite enjoyable. I also ballroom dance a few times a week as a hobby, and this can be quite energetic for a couple of hours. Occasionally, I jog, hike, play tennis, or swim. Eating well is also a good idea.

2. Why is exercise important to you?
For me, it is a great counter to my job, which is mental and mostly sedentary. I find that exercise gives me more energy and clears my head for better thinking or other activities.

3. How do you balance leading a healthy lifestyle with work?
I make pursuing my physical hobbies a priority and a habit. Without them, I don’t feel as well.

4. What advice would you give to others trying to #getfit?

Develop habits of exercise and healthy eating. It’s a lifestyle.

5. And your vice? We all have one.
Not mowing my lawn as much as I should (even though it’s an exercise)!
